Athol Fugard's The Road to Mecca

A collaboration between KLPac and the Sunway University College School of Performance + Media, The Road to Mecca centres on the reclusive Miss Helen, who has become depressed and and appears increasingly unable to care for herself. Pastor Marius Byleveld, who embodies the village’s conservative values, is determined to get Miss Helen into an old-age home. Her friend, Elsa, a young teacher from Cape Town who is deeply suspicious of the patriarchal tradition Byleveld represents, is just as determined that Miss Helen remain free. Their battle of wills brings to light and fundamental conflicts between old young, rural, and urban, Afrikaner and English, religious and secular, male and female. In the end Miss Helen must assert her own self, claim her own life.
