Heineken Thirst 2013

Press Release

Experience a Heineken Moment as Heineken Thirst returns with two stages of electrifying and empowering electronic music on Saturday 14 December at Sepang International Circuit

Watch the experiences unroll as Heine
ken Thirst returns on Saturday, 14 December at Sepang International Circuit with its most extensive and eclectic list of stars to date. Featuring two massive stages – Green Stage and Star Arena – of uncompromising and unconventional music experiences, the line up includes a thrilling mix of established names and emerging leftfield electronic artists from both the international and local music scenes.

From David Guetta to Afrojack, Madeon to Example, W&W to R3HAB and Nervo, Heineken Thirst is constantly pushing boundaries and adding new musical layers to Malaysia’s leading electronic dance music festival. EDM, electro, Dutch House, nu-disco, grime and more come together for an unforgettable night of music and personal experiences.

This year, Heineken Thirst turns the spotlight back onto the thousands of Heineken consumers who provide the energy and emotion that truly powers the festival. We have a series of highlights lined up, ranging from crowd activated engagements to intimate experiences designed to completely transform the night of a few lucky people.

“The music, the stars, the design and the innovation of Heineken Thirst are only part of the story of its success,” comments Jessie Chuah, Heineken Marketing Manager. “What truly differentiates Heineken Thirst is the people – music fans from all walks of life – who join us to bring their energy and open minds. Heineken creates the spark: it’s our fans who bring the night to life.”

One of the highlights of any Heineken Thirst is the custom-built festival site and the bars that really propel the festival into a class of its own. Once you walk through the doors of Heineken Thirst you walk into a world where everything – from the music to the site itself – reflects our commitment to creativity, excellence and progressive new music experiences across the twin spectacles of the Green Stage and the Star Arena.

Lighting up the Green Stage, Heineken Thirst headliner, Parisian socialite David Guetta needs little introduction. The world’s most sought after DJ and the man who brought the worlds of EDM, pop and R&B together, Guetta will demonstrate why he’s the world’s most sought after DJ and producer seamlessly jumping from mainstream pop accessibility to floor pumping bass-filled tunes.

Joining him at Heineken Thirst’s Green Stage is Holland’s Afrojack. The Dutch super-producer is currently riding on the crossover kick of this year’s singles, ‘As Your Friend’ (with Chris Brown) and ‘The Spark’. One of the leaders of the Dutch House scene, Afrojack has the enviable task of building the crowd to fever pitch for David Guetta.

Also up at the Green Stage is a group of fast emerging electronica stars. Award-winning former songwriters for hire, Australia’s Nervo add a shot of high fashion glamour to Heineken Thirst. As one of the hippest acts on the EDM circuit, the last two years have seen them playing shows everywhere from Tomorrowland to MTV’s VMA.

Closer to home, Heineken Thirst regulars Goldfish and Blink will demonstrate why they’re Malaysia’s first EDM superstars. Having recently inked a deal with Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings they’ve recently become regular features on the playlists of artists like Tiesto, Guetta, Nicky Romero and W&W. And it’s a Heineken Thirst debut for Brains and The Eye (B.A.T.E.), the hotly tipped duo who topped JUICE magazine’s Best New DJs of 2012 poll.

If Heineken Thirst’s Green Stage is the main event, the Star Arena is where you go to see the superstars of tomorrow as well as to experience some of the more eclectic tangents and talents that dance music produces. Headlining the Star Arena is W&W, the Dutch duo that is a confirmed favourite with Malaysia’s outdoor music fans. Mixing trance and EDM in equal measures, this dynamic pair is highly ranked by artists like Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto and Sander Van Doorn, as much for the crowd-pleasing potential of their tracks as for their own inspiring live sets.

Yet another Dutch artist on this impressive Heineken Thirst line up, Holland’s R3HAB has been identified as the next step in the evolution of the Dutch House genre pioneered by Heineken Thirst artists like Afrojack and Chuckie. He’s joined by UK EDM legend Example in a typically leftfield addition to Heineken Thirst’s Star Arena. One of the pioneers of the UK dance scene, whose sound has brought together the separate worlds of EDM, rave and grime, Example’s live show will bring a touch of UK street style to Heineken Thirst.

Adding to the ‘you saw it here first’ vibe of Heineken Thirst’s Star Arena is the Malaysian debut of French nu-disco pioneer Madeon. A 19- year old tech geek, Madeon has a reputation for thrilling live shows. His love of new technology allows him to constantly break new boundaries as he attempts to redefine the role of the DJ.

XU needs no introduction to fans of Heineken Thirst. Last year he rocked the Star Arena with his LapSap partner DJ Blink. This year he brings his own rough-edged take on electro and EDM to the stage, this time solo. Expect the unexpected! Also flying alone from his Twilight Actiongirl cohorts, BUNGA will open the Star Arena with an inspired take on the sundown set.

Following the success of his appearance at Heineken Thirst 2012 the world’s top dance music photographer Rukes makes a welcome return to the event to capture the excitement and inspired craziness of this year’s festival via his website www.rukes.com

So get ready to get involved as Heineken Thirst unfolds over the next few weeks. We’ll be asking our music fans to participate in a range of activities designed to stamp their imprint and personality on Heineken Thirst this December. This personalisation, along with the experiences and moments we’ll be creating during the night itself is what separates Heineken Thirst from other music festivals. It’s a spirit of restless evolution and constant surprises that perfectly sums up the spirit of Heineken Thirst.

Stay tuned to Heineken's social media channels for the latest updates: for now, we can tell you that the line-up also includes an internationally known crowd pleaser, Dutch electronica outfit W&W. Rounding up the first reveal of this year’s Heineken Thirst lineup is Australian twin sisters and sometime David Guetta collaborators, NERVO.

Urbanscapes 2013

Press Release

Join Franz Ferdinand, Tegan and Sara, Two Door Cinema Club and dozens more for Urbanscapes Festival 2013, The Big Weekend of creative arts, music and community, at MAEPS on Saturday November 23rd and Sunday November 24th.

Urbanscapes is really excited to announce the latest round of artist additions to an already massive two-day lineup. Australian indie rockers the Last Dinosaurs bring a touch of Jurassic charm to the festival, while Sydney-based improvisational audio-visual outfit The Wires promise to bring the “oohs” and the “aahs”. There’s gutsy a capella from the UK’s Black Voices while closer to home, reality TV and YouTube sensation Asmidar demonstrates the left-turn creativity that Urbanscapes is renowned for.

Our arts lineup continues to evolve and impress. Actorlympics is a who’s who of the Malaysia comedy scene, including legends like Patrick Teoh, Afdlin Shauki, Kuah Jenhan, Douglas Lim, Nell Ng and Rashid Salleh, collaborating to bring a touch of those “Whose Line Is It Anyway” improvisational comedy shows to Urbanscapes. And while Urbanscapes is known for its vendors, it’s never seen anything like Market of Experiences, a group of exhibitions and performance art installations that plays with our notion of retail and society, featuring works by Norman Teh and Jia Ling Chew, Vikas Kailankaje and Mun Kao, amongst others.

Gore fans should find time to check out Kult’s Real Horror Show. Curated by Singapore art gallery Kult 3D, the show includes a series of monsters and ghouls created by some of South East Asia’s most gruesome illustrators, B-movie horror montages and shockingly grabbing hands-on experiences including monster face painting, T-shirt silk screening and a doodling workshop.

For electronica fans, stay tuned to Deer in the Park curated by The Deer Society, with a lineup that includes veteran local stars like Flica, newbie sensations like Dangerdisko and Bass Sekolah as well as regional talents like Indonesia’s Midnight Runners and Bottlesmoker.

Fans of the old skool – this should make you smile. In an Urbanscapes exclusive, The Wknd Sessions hosts two of Malaysia’s most important indie music pioneers, Nice Stupid Playground and Damn Dirty Apes. It’s going to be an Urbanscapes to remember.

This year, for the first time, we’re asking you to start the Big Weekend early, and join us for a series of exclusive Urbanscapes Satellite Shows. On October 31st, we’re very pleased to announce a lineup of two incredible bands for you at KL Live. For their long-awaited return to KL, we bring you the awesome cosmic post-rock power of Explosions in the Sky. The Texans are known for the catchy yet pure cinematic grandeur of their music and the band has an enormous following in Malaysia. Loved the world over for their dynamic stage presence and sheer intensity, every show they play here becomes a huge occasion.

Joining them will be one of Denmark’s leading underground acts, the mighty Mew. Formed in 1994, this trio have been labelled dream pop, shoegaze, indie, alt, post-rock and even new prog, which simply shows how hard it is to categorise their sound. We agree with them, that they’re “the world’s only indie stadium band”, as they make catchy and accessible off-kilter pop that’s equally at home when you’re making Sunday breakfast as in a heaving rock venue.

Some people might think that Imperial is best but at Urbanscapes, we’ve always preferred metric. Especially when Metric are the stars of our second Satellite Show on December 3rd at KL Live. Over five albums, the Canadian New Wave and synth pop-influenced band have built a hardcore global fanbase, based around an incendiary reputation for their live shows and festival performances. Accomplished crowd-pleasers, the band is also known for throwing impromptu cover versions and other musical surprises into its live sets.

To help you make the most of your Urbanscapes experience, we’re offering a buy-one-see-all ticket in the shape of our All-Access Pass. These very limited tickets are available at RM397 and offer entry to Urbanscapes Festival and all Satellite Shows. Individual tickets for the shows are priced at RM177 (per show).

Urbanscapes Festival 2013 is supported by Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism and Culture and other partners.

Heineken Recruits Four Malaysians for Space Expedition

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 September 2013 – What’s the ultimate voyage for a legendary traveler? Taking on the final frontier of course! Leave Earth to the tourists, as Heineken preps you for space.

Earlier last month, 15 Malaysians won the Heineken ‘Legendary Traveler’ contest - the first installation of Heineken’s Voyage campaign. They will be rewarded with an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas where they and a friend will be whisked away on a voyage off the beaten path with Heineken.

In the final installation of the global campaign, Heineken ups the ante by sending four Malaysians to space camp training at Space Expedition Corporation (SXC) in Amsterdam.

“Through our Voyage campaign, we want to further inspire people to be resourceful and open to the world. We are rewarding a select few of our drinkers to go beyond their borders by taking them on the ultimate voyage – an experience that truly allows them to journey to new frontiers,” said Ms. Jessie Chuah, Marketing Manager of Heineken Malaysia

To be fit for their space expedition, four of them will undergo SXC’s unique astronaut training missions, the same training sessions that real astronauts go through.

In the G-centrifuge, they will experience the effects of elevated G-levels of up to 4G or experience weightlessness in the Zero-G or parabolic flights. The ultimate experience will be a stay in the Desdemona simulator, a first of its kind space simulator that is both full-motion and capable of generating all possible G-forces up to 3.3G.

To get on board Heineken’s ultimate voyage to SXC in Amsterdam worth RM40,000, all you need to do is:
Heineken ‘Ultimate Voyage’ Contest
1. Head to http://bit.ly/UltimateVoyage and key in your mobile phone number

2. You will receive a phone call followed by an SMS containing a unique code

3. Log on to www.heineken.com/my and insert the unique code to begin your journey

4. Point the compass in the correct direction, then drag and release to fly around the globe towards the next destination

5. Scoring for each voyage is determined by the overall distance from the intended destination at the end of each level

6. The lower the number of kilometers at the end of the game, the higher your chance of winning the prize!

Voyage is the fifth installment of the Heineken Legends campaign and is their latest global initiative that aims to inspire its drinkers to push their boundaries and seek experiences outside of their comfort zone.

The ‘Ultimate Voyage’ contest runs from 3rd Sept – 16th Oct 2013, so put your skills to the test and get ready for a legendary experience with Heineken!

Kids in Charge! Advisory board launched at Thistle Port Dickson Resort

image credit: Maggie Cheong, words: Jack Choo

The Thistle Port Dickson Resort has taken innovation to the next level by appointing ten kids into a provisional Advisory Board. Their main task will be to deliberate amongst themselves and suggest exciting and fun activities that can be implemented into the hotel’s activities, exclusively for kids.

The quest for the Kids in Charge! Advisory board was launched as part of Thistle’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, with some 65 children from 6 local schools and homes, including Agape Home School and Home of Peace invited to be part of the campaign. Overseeing the campaign were Simon Farr, Regional Director of Operations of Thistle Hotels, Mr Chinthaka Weerasinghe, Country Manager Malaysia, SriLankan Airlines and Mr KJ Wong, General Manager (GSA), SriLankan Airlines.

The nationwide search was open to all children aged 7 to 12 years old residing in West and East Malaysia, including children of expatriates. Kids interested in participating only needed to download the entry form from Thistle’s website, answer three questions and of course, obtain the consent of their relevant parents/guardians to participate.

All entries received were then reviewed by a panel of six judges and narrowed down to 10 finalists who were inducted into the board. Each of the 10 board members will then be invited for four 3D/2N stays for a family of four at Thistle Port Dickson, during which the board meetings will convene. In all, 4 board meetings will take place over a period of four months until December 2013, after which the board will be dissolved.

When frigglive asked why induct children into an advisory board, Mr John Murphy, General Manager of Thistle Port Dickson Resort had this to say:

“Children today are more astute than ever before. Looking after them and meeting their needs is serious business. Very often hotels tend to focus on being hospitable to adults, but in our efforts we neglect to take in the expectations of this very important demographic of guests. As grown-ups  we can very easily lose sight of their needs. This is why we’re taking this very seriously at Thistle Port Dickson Resort, to ultimately allow kids to decide what they want”.

So without further ado and with an appropriate drum roll  here are the 10 finalists who made the grade:

Adam Mrani, 12, Aisyah Batrisyia, 12, Anitel Palur, 8, Chong Yun Xian, 8, Christopher Nantha, 12, Ella Morris, 8, Fong Jin, 11, Ng Zhang En, 9, Nur Jannah Lee, 8, and Tan Kah Hong, 12.

Following the induction ceremony held recently, the kids were promptly put to work by being taken on a tour of the hotel and then convening for their first ice-breaker meeting. There will be monthly meetings held after this.

Each board member is encouraged to contribute original and innovative ideas towards enhancing kids’ experiences at Thistle, and to discuss the implementation of these ideas with the resort management team to assess their creativity and feasibility.

About The Thistle Port Dickson:

The idyllic Thistle Port Dickson Resort, located just 80km from Kuala Lumpur is set in 36 hectares of tropical landscaped gardens, along a 3-kilometre stretch of a private sandy beach in Teluk Kemang, one of the most popular beaches in Port Dickson.  Already recognized by a host of awards and accolades, including the 2012 Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor, Thistle Port Dickson Resort boasts 251 luxuriously furnished rooms with views of either the Straits of Malacca or the resort’s very own golf course. All room bookings at the resort include complimentary unlimited wi-fi, watersports, golf, tennis and many other activities.

Urbanscapes Festival 2013

Press Release

Discover the stars of Urbanscapes and win an All-Access Pass to Urbanscapes Festival and Urbanscapes Satellite shows. From 15 August to 25 August we’ll be hiding QR codes around the Klang Valley and posting clues to their whereabouts on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Be the first person to scan the code and reveal the artist it hides and you’ll walk away with a very cool Urbanscapes All-Access Pass worth an even cooler RM397 that will give you access to Urbanscapes Festival and all Urbanscapes Satellite Shows.

Kuala Lumpur – Get ready to make your November a whole lot bigger as Urbanscapes Festival 2013, The Big Weekend, in association with Malaysia Conference & Exhibition Bureau (MYCEB) and partners, returns with an explosion in the sky of music, arts, fashion, comedy, visual design and, of course, people. On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th we’ll be revealing Malaysia’s most diverse line up of creative talent for a weekend-long carousel of creativity and fun for all ages.

Urbanscapes is Malaysia’s largest and longest-running creative arts festival. Two days in November where everyone gets to play a part. It’s a place to stumble upon something new. To picnic with strangers. To watch and feel as the sun sets. Somewhere to dance under the stars. To hug. To kiss. To laugh uncontrollably. To watch the world grow a smile. Moments. This is the weekend you’ve been waiting for; the city’s Big Weekend.

For 2013, even our venue is bigger. We’ll be unveiling Urbanscapes at a fantastic new venue, the Malaysian Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS). With around 12 acres of lawns, hills and gardens to play with we’re letting our imaginations run wild, not to mention adding a dash of European-style pastoral festival chic to the sleek urbanism of Urbanscapes. Want to watch your favourite bands from the comfort of a gently rolling hillside? Get away from the crowd and chill with your friends under a canopy of trees and woodland? Urbanscapes Festival 2013 will be an amazing place to relax, hang out and enjoy the magic of the festival.

In and around it all we’ll have some of the region’s best food vendors, retailers, musicians, artists, comedians, thespians and all the artwork, installation pieces and excitement they can create in four specially created zones, complete with their own entertainment stages. We’re not going to say too much, but their names, The Commons, Woods, End of the Road and The Field should give you an idea of size and scope of our Big Weekend.

Headlining the Big Weekend are Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand, who will be in town for an exclusive performance at Urbanscapes Festival. It’s a concert not to be missed for festival-goers around the region as Malaysia will be the ONLY South East Asian stop in their leg of the tour in support of their fourth album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. Also confirmed in the international line-up so far are the excellent Two Door Cinema Club, Efterklang, and Tegan and Sara.

The Canadian indie rock twins, Tegan and Sara will be touring in support of their seventh studio album Heartthrob, released in January 2013 and debuting at #3 on the Billboard 200 Chart. Influenced by synth pop and punk rock, the siblings, who’ve been making music since 1995, have gained a steadfast following and been nominated for numerous awards, including several Juno Awards, a Grammy Award for their Get Along DVD and most recently, they took home the Canadian Radio Music Award for Best New Group.

Complementing the Big Weekend are two Satellite Show
s at KL Live, with Explosions in the Sky and Mew performing on 31 October and Metric on 3 December.

Line up announcements also so far include the very tasty Pierre Hollins, the comedian Time Out London describes with just two words – ‘Bloody Funny’ – Oh Chenatku!, Kyoto Protocol, They Will Kill Us All, Kuah Jenhan, Studio Bikin and Allthatissolid. Stay tuned for some major announcements over the next few weeks. We’re going to be teasing out some of our headliners and collaborators and we’re pretty confident it’s going to spark some serious water cooler conversations!

Want to star in this year’s Urbanscapes promo video? This year we’re turning the attention on the people who really make every festival special: the fans who support it year after year. Send us the footage of your favourite Urbanscapes moments and journeys and we’ll edit them into a special clip that will be shown across Malaysia and beyond. Hanging with your friends. Chatting with the artists. Dancing in the mud. Show us what Urbanscapes really means to you.

In early September we’ll be sending a call-out for your video clips and footage from previous Urbanscapes. Look out for the mechanics on our social media platforms. In return, you’ll get so see your footage immortalised and broadcast across the nation and we’ll list your name in the credits for the world to see.

For the latest on Urbanscapes, be sure to check out www.urbanscapes.com.my and our Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/urbanscapes), Twitter (https://twitter.com/urbanscapes) and Instagram (@urbanscapes) channels.
