Santa in Penang Christmas Cards

click on image to view bigger version
Selling Penang with Santa’s help (edited from article in The Star, Metro North, Nov 28, 2005) Santa Claus has been “spotted” around Penang – visiting well-known sites and tourist spots, taking a ride on a ferry and a trishaw, and even pedalling the three-wheeler himself! These scenes of Santa and his reindeer in Penang are the paintings of artist Eric Yeoh, 29, printed on a set of 12 greeting cards for Christmas. “I had a fun time painting the scenes and getting the cards printed,” said Yeoh, an engineer by profession. His personal favourites are the ones depicting Santa cheering a Chingay performance featuring the state and national flags outside the Penang City Hall building, and Santa pedalling a tri-shaw past some pre-war buildings and Komtar in George Town with two reindeer as passengers. Other scenes have Santa and his reindeer riding on trishaws, on a ferry, on a boat past the Penang Bridge, and on the funicular train up Penang Hill with presents in the goods carriage. There are also scenes of Santa waving from a window of a pre-war building, in front of the St George's Church, atop Fort Cornwallis next to the Seri Rambai cannon, and at the door of a gaily decorated Queen Victoria memorial clock tower. Yeoh also painted Santa distributing presents to monkeys at the Penang Botanic Gardens (yes, monkeys get presents too) and sunbathing - minus his red suit – on a deck chair at the Batu Ferringhi beach. On the back of each card is a short description of the place or activity depicted. “Many countries have Christmas cards that are locally themed but universal in appeal, such as those depicting the koala bear in Australia, but there are not many of these types of cards in Malaysia,” said Yeoh. The insides of the cards were left blank and could be printed over for corporate use. A portion from the proceeds of the card sales will go towards the Penang Heritage Trust (PHT), of which Yeoh is a member. The cards are available from the Penang Heritage Trust in Stewart Lane (04-2642631), Disc & Dat Music Centre in Tanjong Tokong (04-8990864), Pintail Cafe & Bistro (04-2642694) in Upper Penang Road. Only RM15 for a set of 12 cards. The cards are available in Kuala Lumpur by emailing your orders to art@ascension.com.my For details, call PenangArt at 012-4653893 or email: penangart@hotmail.com

The Original Zouk Abuse Story

As you may have heard, this incident shocked most of us, customers of Zouk and other venues. This is their official story.. http://zoukabuse.blogspot.com/ While we question the victim's movements that lead towards the incident, it is still very wrong and inexcusable for security staff to attack patrons, unless provoked excessively. Their function is simply to protect, ensure security and break apart any violent behaviour amongst intoxicated or aggravated patrons. We will still wonder why Ju-Lee, upon seeing her fiance in that state, didn't simply run out of the toilet first to get emergency help immediately from someone or anyone for that matter. Why when she is so familiar with her fiance's health condition, did she still not take calm measured actions, which should have been routine to her. We're guessing that in her state of panic, the thought never occurred to her. Why did the bouncers fail to identify a sick patron in need of medical help immediately? Why didn't anyone help? Questions plenty, sketchy details everywhere. Different people handle emergencies differently we figure and maybe this whole incident could have been avoided. We found out through one of the managers at Zouk that most of the security staff are new guys and the old ones who we had very high respect for and took the effort to get to know us patrons were no longer there. It is unfortunate that this incident has happened and we wish James and Ju-Lee a speedy recovery and hope Zouk management, after their internal investigation take the neccessary action against those accountable and publicly issues their side of the story for our assurance that this never happens again. party hard party clean party safe

GEMMA Youth Based Humanitarian Organization

GEMMA has just been born to play its part in trying to make this world a better place. GEMMA is a youth based humanitarian organization. We will be organizing our organization's official press launch on the 18th November 2005 at the Putra World Trade Centre and will be officiated by YA Bhg Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. We have also invited officials from various government and non government agencies such as The Ministry of Youth and Sports, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Ministry of Education and The UN to support our organization Launch. We are looking for volunteers to assist this launch. We don’t have much time and resources and hope that you all may be able to help in these departments: 1. Inviting and following up on guests to the launch (Urgent!!). - expected number of guest: 150

- corporate sector - Higher Learning Institutions - NGOs and Youth groups 2. During the event day - usherers - decoration - general helpers GEMMA's vission is to embed the humanitarian spirit within the youths of Malaysia. our objectives are: To provide a platform for the youth to be involved in humanitarian activities; To provide knowledge and skills to the public especially the youth on constructive and positive reactions towards disasters; To provide the best and most effective humanitarian assistance for civilians in any disasters, conflict, or underdeveloped/ impoverished communities; and To promote global humanitarian culture and ideology in Malaysia

GEMMA plans to achieve its objectives by creating and providing a platform for everyone espescially youths in humanitarian related activities and programs such as: a. Humanitarian Workshops GEMMA has identified the basics and the dynamics of working in a humanitarian relief aid environment. Get trained by highly qualified trainers on emergency rescue where you can learn the basics of First Aid, Ascending and Descending (A&D), Search and Rescue (SAR), and safety precautions and coordination. Learn from experienced humanitarians the different aspects of disaster and conflict management, distribution of humanitarian aid, refugee and IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) care, trauma relief, needs assessment techniques, and many more. We hope to cultivate a generation of dynamic and efficient humanitarians. b. GEMMA Humanitarian Expeditions Our humanitarian expeditions is an activity that combines the adventurous experience of backpacking, with the soulful satisfaction of community based work. Travel and experience different and unique cultures, sceneries and people from places like Africa, Aceh, South Asia, Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, or wherever place that requires humanitarian assistance. Many areas in Malaysia too need a lot of humanitarian assistance in places and communities that have been devastated by flash floods, strong winds and also poverty. Not only you get to travel, we will coordinate participants and volunteers of our expeditions with the vast scopes of humanitarian duties such as Emergency Rescue, IDP and Refugee care, or maybe even education and psychosocial programs. With GEMMA, anybody can be a humanitarian. c. GEMMA Road Show and Humanitarian Campaign One of our strategies of attracting youths here in Malaysia in humanitarian relief is by conducting a National Road Show and a Campaign on Global Humanitarian Plights across higher learning institutions all over the country. The theme of the campaign is "A Touch Of Youth, For The Spirit Of Humanity". The objective of conducting this campaign is to educate the youths of Malaysia and make them aware of global issues such as world poverty, repercussions of war and conflicts, famine, and disasters. We would also like to educate these youths on what is humanitarian relief and the different aspects involved in it. With the backing of potential sponsors, we are hoping that we would be able to do this by early 2006. We are initially planning to have ten of these road shows. Our minimum target of the road show is for GEMMA to be established in the universities and colleges that we visit. We hope that in the future, GEMMA will have humanitarian volunteers from Universities and colleges all over Malaysia. If anyone is interested to help out, please get back to me ASAP. You may contact Zhariff at 016-9298317 or Mr Max 012-6700790. Thank you n god bless.

The MTV ASIA Awards 2006

The MTV ASIA Awards 2006 Returns To Rock Bangkok, Thailand Asia's biggest pan-regional music event to take place on Saturday, 25 February 2006

After an unforgettable MTV Asia Aid event in Thailand last year, the iconic MTV Asia Awards returns to rock Bangkok in 2006! Celebrating the Awards for the fifth consecutive year, the event that celebrates and pays tribute to musical talent across the Asia Pacific region will be held at the IMPACT Arena once more. Scheduled to take place on Saturday, 25 February 2006, the pan-Asia awards ceremony will be witnessed by thousands of screaming fans and millions of home viewers across the region. Touted to be the most glamorous and memorable annual music event, MTV Asia will be presenting a total of 19 awards during the show to recognise and promote the icons of youth culture and music.

David Flack, Executive Vice President, Creative, Content and Network Marketing, MTV Networks Asia, said, "We are delighted to bring the excitement and glamour of the MTV Asia Awards to Thailand next year. The event has evolved through the years to encourage wider participation among young people across Asia, allowing them to experience the event like no other. This also means greater creativity and flexibility for our sponsors to reach them in an unparalleled manner. So stay tuned, because the event next year will definitely spring a number of surprises."

Since the launch of the MTV Asia Awards in 2002 in Singapore, the event has gained a loyal following among young people aged 15 to 34 years old. Previously hosted by Ronan Keating and Mandy Moore (2002), Shaggy and Coco Lee (2003) and Vanness Wu and Michelle Branch (2004), the phenomenal show brings together a unique blend of East and West, featuring the largest gathering of international and local talent ever seen in the region.

In 2005, the MTV Asia Awards was repositioned into a global benefit, in support of the recovery efforts taking place in Asia, following the aftermath of the tsunami. The event, known as MTV Asia Aid, took place at IMPACT Arena in Bangkok on 3 February 2005. MTV Networks Asia partnered with UNICEF and made them the major recipient of funds collected from the event. Hosted by R&B diva, Alicia Keys, the event saw more than 11,000 fans gathering to show their support for the cause.

Too Phat Launch Invite

After two years of internal strain and rumours of a break-up, Too Phat looks set to squash all doubts with a whopping double album. Izuan Shah, The Star checks out the fuss. Malique and Joe Flizzow are back. Together as Too Phat, the rap duo - regarded as Malaysia's undisputed kings of hip-hop - are gearing up to reclaim their place with their fourth studio album. It is becoming their tour de force in a decade-long career of illustrious hits and regional success. Malique, who came under entertainment media fire last year after retreating from the spotlight due to a host of personal problems, is back. He has a lot to say and prove alongside chief collaborator Joe Flizzow (who had a solo career spin last year). Rebirth into Reality, a titanic double-disc hip-hop opus, contains 30 tracks (15 on each disc). It will be available from Sept 27 under the group's long-time label EMI. A first for Too Phat is that Rebirth will also be released under Kartel Records, its own imprint that already includes local hip-hop favourites Phlowtron, KLG Sqwad plus a list of newcomers. Too Phat is back, bigger and better than ever. For mainstream noise, the appearance of Siti Nurhaliza on the track Dua Dunia is bound to make the crossover news. An English version of the track called Million Miles is also tipped for regional success. Holding down the beats on the decks is Too Phat's long standing deejay T-Bone; other cameos and guest collaborators throughout the two discs include V.E. and Yasin, Indonesian dangdut queen Inul Daratista, Filipina R&B/ pop star Kyla, Taiwanese rap outfit Machi and Thai superstar emcee Joey Boy. Modelled loosely after OutKast's two-disc monster Speakerboxx/ The Love Below and Nelly's double opus Suit/ Sweat, the Too Phat rappers will each have an album of their own - Malique handles the Rebirth side while Flizzow rolls the rhymes on Reality. The black/ white, dark/ light theme of the album promises to excite - it is set to reveal the duo's more serious, pensive and unabashedly honest side. The new material will likely see Malique and Flizzow at their most creative and uncompromising best. Too Phat also becomes the most prolific Malaysian hip-hop outfit with four albums to their name, once Rebirth is unleashed. The video for the album's first single Snap is slated to premiere at the official album launch on Sept 22 at Zouk Club, KL. Most of the material on Rebirth is self-produced by Too Phat - with other producers (Illegal, Jae Chong, Yasin, Carlo Nanny and Navin) tightening up the loose ends. The album took nine months to complete. "This album will reflect a Too Phat that's definitely more mature, both as performers and as business people. We all feel it's the best album they've created so far," said Too Phat manager Raimi M. Yusof. In classic hip-hop idol tradition, the boys have also been branching out with their own clothing line - Phat Caps. Spirits in the Too Phat camp are on the up and this whopping double album is a concerted effort by the boys and their team to make a huge impression. "We're looking at another five good years of Too Phat as major players on the performing stage. I feel that there's enough classic material in these two discs to carve that space for them, before they go behind the scenes and into producing (other hip-hop artistes)," he added. If there was one homegrown act to overshadow Mawi mania this year, then Too Phat is our best bet.

Live Showcase: Thursday 15th September - Penang, Chillout (9pm onwards) Friday 16th September - Atmosphere, KL (10.00pm onwards) Meet the Fan/Autograph Session: Thursday 15th September - Gurney Plaza, Penang (6.45pm - 7.15pm) Friday 16th September - 1 Utama, (6.30 - 7.00pm) Saturday 17th September - Tower Records, KL (4.00pm - 4.30pm) ‘Beautiful Intentions’ is the title of her third solo album, released on her own independent label Red Girl Records (inspired by her love of Liverpool Football Club) and distributed locally by Suria Records and EQ Music. Melanie will be performing a half-hour acoustic set of her new tracks including the UK Top 10 singles ‘Next Best Superstar’ and ‘Better Alone’. The spring release of ‘Beautiful Intentions’ in the UK saw the album enter the charts in the Top 25. The album had been nine months in the making and critics were pleased with the results, hailing Melanie for her “emotionally honest” work. One reviewer said, “She’s certainly not lost any of that girl power!” Melanie C, though she wasn’t dubbed Indie Spice by the British music press until after the Spice Girls’ second album, had always made it clear that she preferred Blur to Take That. With her debut ‘Northern Star’ (released on Virgin Records in 2000) and her follow-up ‘Reason’ (2003), Melanie broke from her Sporty Spice persona to prove herself as a legitimate musician with two surprisingly diverse records. Melanie showed she had a strong voice, a good sense of melody, and the personality to deliver everything from urban balladry to Brit pop to post-modern rock to neo-industrial punk to techno-influenced dance and electronica. With album sales close to three million copies today, Melanie C’s focus on music over mannerisms proves she has brains, and that’s real girl power.

Cancer Awareness - Celebrate Life - Yellow Week

Yellow Week will be upon us soon on the 12- 18th September. This year we will be raising funds for a mobile cancer screening centre (a bus providing mammography, colorectal screening etc) for the urban poor and rural areas. Your support for this cause would be fantastic! The mobile bus for the urban poor is a project which is achievable with a little bit of help. It will be about RM600,000 to set up. It is a programme which is sorely needed in the Klang Valley. Statistics have shown that for underpriviledged women newly diagnosed with breast cancer the average size of the breast lump is 5.5cm .... larger than a golf ball.... the size of a small peach!!! This is not a kampung in the middle of nowhere.... this is KL. Her chances of beating something like this is less than 50%. The bus can at least help educated and screen (mammograms) over 5-6000 women a year and at least change that statistic to something more positive. We have a couple of fund raising events lined up for the week and of course a few awareness campaigns based on the 'Celebrate Life ' theme. Please support ‘Yellow Week’ events in September! A synoposis of the events are as follows: 16-18th: Cancer Expo, Suria KLCC & Bangsar Shopping Centre (free breast cancer examinations, fashion show of cancer survivors: all ages 6yrs - 76yrs! and other activities) 16th: Wear Yellow Day: Participants from corporations, organizations & schools wear NCSM yellow ribbons or a yellow item of clothing and donate in support of NCSM 16th: CelebrateLife! Dinner Show with The Philharmonic Society of Selangor, Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur 18th: CelebrateLife Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament, Palm Garden Golf Course Wristband Contest August 15th-September 14th.. Prizes worth more than RM10,000! (Tune in to MixFM, read the newspapers or call NCSM at 03-2698 7300 for more contest details) Many cancers can be cured if detected at an early stage. Be proactive. Be aware. Get educated. Early detection saves lives. Please call if you would like to participate in Wear Yellow Day or buy a table or more for the dinner!! We would really appreciate companies to buy the tables at the dinner. The dinner is a 4 course Western set and the show is going to be a lot of fun. The tables are priced at RM5000, RM 4000, RM3000 and RM2000 for the cause. Volunteers are also needed for these events. Please write to brian@lariche.net directly for details. Please pass this along and try to get your friends to help out as well. WOMAD Singapore, 26-28 August 2005

WOMAD stands for World of Music, Arts and Dance, expressing the central aim of the WOMAD festival - to bring together and to celebrate many forms of music, arts and dance drawn from countries and cultures all over the world. WOMAD was originally inspired by Peter Gabriel: "Pure enthusiasm for music from around the world led us to the idea of WOMAD in 1980 and thus to the first WOMAD festival in 1982. The festivals have always been wonderful and unique occasions and have succeeded in introducing an international audience to many talented artists. "Equally important, the festivals have also allowed many different audiences to gain an insight into cultures other than their own through the enjoyment of music. Music is a universal language, it draws people together and proves, as well as anything, the stupidity of racism." As an organisation, WOMAD now works in many different ways, but our aims are always the same - at festivals, performance events, through recorded releases and through educational projects, we aim to excite, to inform, and to create awareness of the worth and potential of a multicultural society. The WOMAD Festivals Since the first festival in Shepton Mallett, England in 1982, WOMAD has presented more than 145 events in 22 different countries and islands. Having established its presence in the UK, WOMAD 's unique nomadic indentity evolved gradually during the eighties. In 1988, the festival began to be presented internationally, with initial events in Denmark and Canada. Since then, WOMAD 's worldwide profile has grown quickly, now embracing events in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the Canary Islands, Sicily and the UK each year. The festivals are often weekend-long, family-oriented, active and diverse musical events, featuring simultaneous performances on two or three stages, including participatory workshops and special events for children, as well as music and dance sessions hosted by many of the visiting artists. Visit www.womad.org or Womad Singapore for more details. Posted by Hello
