Tokyo Magic Hour: What does the radical Amir Muhammad have to show for his six months in Japan, sponsored by Nippon Foundation’s Asian Public Intellectuals Fellowship? A love story! Told through visual non-sequitors! Radikal!
Young Contemporary Awards 2004: An annual competition, also known as Bakat Muda, this exhibition features exciting works by Chuah Chong Yong (a whole wall of SMS-es), Mohd Ekram (fan blown garbage bags) and Abdul Muthalib (laser cut metal plates previously soaked in pig’s blood, then cleansed to make them halal again). As is common with the Balai Seni Lukis exhibition listings on our website, it has generated some heated debate. Check it out.
Wong Hoy Cheong Solo Exhibition: Perhaps our most internationally profiled artist, Hoy Cheong is known for his politics and savvy irreverence. Some recent works include maps that imagined if London was a colony of Penang, and a documentary titled Lust & Empire: The Discreet Rule of Malaysia in Austria 1863 to 1955.
The Visit of the Tai Tai: Krishen Jit co-directs with the fabulous Ivan Heng, who plays the titular Tai Tai. The Tai Tai has returned to her poor hometown, with bodyguards, caged panther, lots of money, and an empty coffin… Can the goodly townfolks be tempted to murder for money?
31 Candles: What happened when six women are invited to a birthday party? This play written by writer-photographer Bernice Chauly has certainly gone through quite a bit to get here. Starring Ida Nerina, Christina Orow, Nicole-Ann Thomas, Sabrina Hassan, Sarah Shahrum and Zulhaila Siregar. Directed by Zahim Albakri. Check out the staged reading at Stor Teater, Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka, KL, on Thu Sep 30, 8pm. Admission is free.
Butterfly Lovers: Local TV actress Ms Cheong Kar Yan produces and performs in this staging of the popular Chinese folk tale. It tells of two tragic poets who, prevented from being together in life, turn into butterflies upon their deaths. Directed by Charles Jong. Staged at Panggung Bandaraya, KL, from Fri Oct 1 to Sun Oct 10.
Sirocco – Australian World Music Band: Established in 1980, this band’s music combines Celtic, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South American music with that of Australia's Aboriginal and Anglo-Irish heritage. They play two nights at Greenhall Actors Studio, Penang, on Sat Oct 2 and Sun Oct 3.
