Kakiseni: Hate the sin, love the singers? Theatre Listings and more

Hate the sin, love the singers? Are your favourite pop stars doomed to sizzle in hell? Or will Malaysia’s mighty morality scorch them like overdone satays before they even get there? Former Siasah editor Mustaqeem looks at the cellphone-busting phenomenon of Akademi Fantasia with its cohort of cute belters, and wonders: Why do we enthusiastically send so many SMS-es in support of the very ones we would also condemn to perdition? Singers are not alone. Actors get no bloody respect too. Instant Café Theatre’s youngest member and Cameronian nominee, Ghafir Akbar, tells us about a new performance programme at Sunway College that will hopefully go a long way in changing society’s attitudes; and if not society’s, then at least his parents’. Aspiring young actors, feel free to print this article out and accidentally leave it on your family dining table. In the face of so many challenges to our country’s faith – pop idols, ungrateful children, belligerent editors – National Laureate Noordin Hassan attempts to remind us of the Qur’an’s truth from the stage. Who better to understand his play Demi Zaitun than a reviewer named Zaiton (aka Toni Kasim)? Check out her ever incisive (but necessarily careful) review. Meanwhile, Jerome Kugan comes out from hiding to talk to members of Five Arts Centre. They celebrate their 20th year in existence – a remarkable feat, considering their reliance on commercially unviable projects. Will their answers make more sense than their movement-intensive performances? At the polls, we asked if you agree that Malaysian writers should write in the National Language. Interestingly, on the second day, the number of yes’s jumped suddenly to twice the number of no’s, as if someone with a point to prove was frantically clicking on the poll with all the computers within reach. At last count, however, 81 disagreed with the language criteria, 71 agreed, while 100 of you voted ‘depends’. Does this prove a point? It proves that people in this country think that numbers prove a point. If anything, it proves the question is badly phrased, as a very savvy poster pointed out in the feedback to Zedeck’s popular KL Lit Fest article. For the record, I think that a Malaysian writer is a writer who is Malaysian, no more, no less. May he or she be heard, read, and reprinted in every LRT train. Some recommendations for the coming weeks: Wish I Was There, new play written by Gavin Yap for The Actors Studio’s Malaysian Playwright Series, will run from Thu Sep 2 to Sun Sep 5. Though not exactly a sequel to his Dumb Waiter-like Sweet Nothing, the play stars Patrick Teoh and Gavin as two dead men whose souls are stuck in the basement of heaven. Sort of. At the MPO, Joshua Bell, the prettiest violin player this side of the gender equation, will be in town to perform the Brahms’s Violin Concerto, as well as an evening of solo offerings. And lastly, our glorious country will celebrate her 47th year of independence this Tue Aug 31. The party, complete with hell-bound entertainers (out to take the whole country along with them), will be held the night before at the Dataran Merdeka, as well as other liberated patches of grass in your respective states. In an interview with Bernama, our former prime minister said regarding young Malaysians: “If we tell them that our country was once colonised, they probably wouldn’t have an inkling of what it’s all about. Hence, it is not easy to make them realise the importance of safeguarding the nation unless we relate to them continuously of the past years’ experiences.” He then suggested that we sing patriotic songs to safeguard ourselves against our former colonialists. You know, dude, it’s been 47 years. I do hope that at some point, the government will see fit to move beyond fear-instilling rhetorics and start encouraging people to be independent minded too. It’s about time. In closing, I would like to quote a kindly mee-goreng cooking makcik I met at Chow Kit last year: “Kalau orang tu baik, dia tu bebas lah.” Happy Merdeka folks. Julian and his friends' energetic mix of blues, rock, soul and reggae tunes drawn enthusiastic response from the audience at all their performances. The strength of this band lies not only in the talent and musicianship of the individual members but also in the way they play together. Malaysian Video Awards Festival, 10th-17th September

The Malaysian Video Awards Council was established in 1994 and the 1st Malaysian Video Awards Festival was held in 1995. This was the first ever awards of its kind in Malaysia and the region. The aim was to create awareness of the individual crafts involved in the film and video production industry and pay tribute to the individual craftsperson. The annual festival is organised in corporation with the Ministry of Culture, Arts & Tourism under the auspicious of the National Art Gallery. The Malaysian Video Awards Council is an independent not-for-profit organisation, funded by voluntary contributions from the industry. The Festival has a full 8-day Programme, with Talks and Seminars that provoke and inspire, and Screenings of local, ASEAN and International films held at the National Art Gallery. Selected screenings of notable entries for the current year’s MVA are also held. Entrance to the MVA Festival Talks, Seminars and Screenings for 8 days at the National Art Gallery is FREE to the public. The 8-day MVA Festival strives to create a conducive meeting place for industry professionals and aspiring film makers from Malaysia, ASEAN and other countries, to meet and exchange ideas with one another. The Festival continues to encourage and unearth new talents in the art of film making as a result of its focus on Animation, Experimental and Short Films. The Awards Night is held on the last evening, usually at a hip party venue with a happening party programme and entertainment. Be there ! Today the MVA Festival is regarded as the leading event in the local Video Arts and Production Calendar. The awards itself is looked upon as a milestone in one’s creative craftsmanship as it is the only awards that recognises the craftsperson behind the production. For students and aspiring filmmakers, the MVA is THE award to win, as it gives instant recognition to the winner and creates many opportunities for advancement in the film industry. The MVA Festival is also well known regionally as it has an ASEAN Award Category. The MVA has been recognizing regional talents by giving awards for Best ASEAN TV Commercial, Best ASEAN Short Film & Best ASEAN Feature Film. The MVA website, www.mva.com.my, is a showcase of Malaysian creativity and film culture. It has also developed into a resource directory for Malaysians and international ‘surfers’ to understand the Malaysian film and video production industry in more depth. The website is also a human resource centre; employers seeking professional talents and talents seeking opportunities, use the site to network and exchange resumes, ideas and contacts. Check it out, join the MVA Forum and say your piece! The MVA website is the official on-line fact sheet for those wanting to enter the competition and all information can be downloaded easily. The 8-day Festival Programme details will also be posted on the site, and it will be updated as the Festival happens. The MVA Council, while continuing its work to innovate and serve the industry, also seeks Sponsorship support from local and regional industry players to help create opportunities for young filmmakers here in Malaysia. Grants, subsidies and potential growth opportunities will encourage the young to pursue their dreams and to contribute to the country’s standing as a regional creative hub. The band currently on tour in the United States is slated to perform at The Bukit Kiara Equestrian Indoor Arena on Aug 15 at 8pm. Hoobastank, comprising Doug Robb, Chris Hesse, Markku Lappalainen and Dan Estrin, recently released its second album The Reason, which went platinum and hit the No.4 spot on the US Billboard Top 200. The event is organised by Absolute Entertainment Sdn Bhd, event organisers of the recent Sarah Brightman concert at Stadium Negara. The band performed here in 2002. Tickets for the concert are priced at RM120 and are available from www.axcess.com.my or 03-7491 9999. Tickets go on sale on July 26. Contributed by Kelvina The Review: Let's put it this way. Hoobastank Rocked Big Time!! We have a new found respect for the group who poured their hearts out to give us a super pumped and energetic show that even left the security guards jumpin along with the crowd. Even the opening acts were that good. The bad? Unsupportive others who didn't show up for a show worth every cent to those who did. You just had to be there. Comparable in quality to Linkin Park and Incubus. Not much of a rock fan myself but definitely will remember the concert! Hoooooooooooobaastank!!! Jump!! Jump!! We want more..
